Congratulations to all those honoured at the Annual Wine and Cheese Gathering!
The gathering began with an excellent lecture from Dr. Victoria Wohl from the University of Toronto. Following the lecture, the annual awards for Classical Studies students were awarded.
The Classical Studies Department is delighted to announce to our students, alumni, and friends that our own Professor Christina Vester has been chosen to receive one of the University of Waterloo's four Distinguished Teacher Awards for 2014!
The Department of Classical Studies is proud to announce that Prof. Sheila Ager has accepted the position of Area Editor, Hellenistic World, Encyclopedia of Ancient History (Wiley-Blackwell). In both print and on-line formats, the EAH is the definitive, modern reference work for the study of the ancient world. This is a wonderful recognition of Prof. Ager's noted expertise in Hellenistic history, as well as her editorial and leadership skills. As of Fall 2013. Prof.
When professors Sheila Ager and Riemer Faber convened the first international conference under the Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies in 2008, they may not have anticipated the outcome. But the conference called ‘Belonging and Isolation in the Hellenistic World’ has materialized five years later in a University of Toronto Press publication of the same name.
The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo was saddened this summer by the death of our long-time colleague and friend, Sally Haag. Sally had been a member of Classical Studies at Waterloo since the 1960s, long before Classical Studies became an independent department; she retired in 1996. A true philologist, with a great love of languages, Sally was a dedicated and inspiring teacher whose abilities were recognized by the University in 1993 when she received the Distinguished Teacher Award.

Last year the Dean of Arts introduced a series of new Faculty-based awards to better recognize the accomplishments of both faculty and staff members: Arts Teaching Awards, Arts Research Awards, and Arts Service Awards.
Launching this new recognition initiative, the first recipients of the Teaching Awards were recently selected by the dean-appointed Arts Awards and Honours Committee, with a formal award event planned for September. Christina Vester has been selected as one of the (inaugural) recipients of the Arts Teaching Award 2013.
"Effective May 1, 2005, in accordance with the 2003 Faculty Salary Settlement, the University of Waterloo established an Outstanding Performance Fund to reward faculty members for outstanding contribution in teaching and scholarship," writes Vice-President, Academic & Provost Geoff McBoyle. "I am very pleased to announce the award recipients for 2013, and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them for their outstanding contributions to the University of Waterloo."
Arranged by faculty, among the 2013 winners for Arts was Sheila Ager.
