Luke Postle has received a 2018 Faculty of Mathematics Golden Jubilee Research Excellence Award. The $2,500 award, which is conferred to early or mid-career faculty members who have made outstanding research contributions, was established in 2017 to mark the 50^th anniversary of the Faculty of Mathematics. 

Twelve C&O students received their graduate degrees at the convocation ceremonies on June 15, 2018.

Zhihan Gao's paper "On the metric s-t path traveling salesman problem" has been selected as the SIGEST article for the latest issue of SIAM Review.

Sally Dong was awarded the 2018 Jessie W.H. Zou Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research in the Faculty of Mathematics.

Ahmad Abdi is a recipient of the 2018 Huawei Prize for his paper "Packing odd T-joins with at most two terminals".

Gabriel Coutinho, Chris Godsil and Krystal Guo are organizing a Workshop on Algebraic Graph Theory & Quantum Walks. 

Waterloo graduate student David Qian, under the guidance of the Faculty of Mathematics’ Ricardo Fukasawa and Jochen Koenemann, introduced optimization techniques based on integer and dynamic programming to surgeons at SickKids hospital. By applying mathematical optimization algorithms, Qian and team advised doctors on the best surgical cut points to minimize the volume-difference between the surgically modified skull, and an ideal skull.

The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is opening a cybersecurity lab and investing $1.78 million into research at the University of Waterloo to develop advanced cybersecurity and privacy tools.
