Judges reviewed a total of 24 complex-systems presentations and chose seven winners at April's Student Project Symposium. Choosing the top three in each category was not an easy task! Thank you to all who participated to make this event a success, and a special thanks to Kirsten Wright for her hard work in organizing and promoting the event. Congratulations to our winners!

Managing air pollution, toxic substances, and climate change is a complex, linked sustainability challenge. To better inform efforts to address these issues, we need to understand how policies to address emissions translate into societal benefits. In this talk, Dr. Selin will present work from her research group, using a systems approach to better understand air pollutants such as particulate matter, ozone, and mercury.

Join us for the WICI Poetry & Complexity event on Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

WICI Talk: Dr. Johan Koskinen -Analysing covert networks from unstructured sources

Understanding covert and criminal behaviour from a social network perspective is gathering increasing currency. While the standard social network paradigm assumes that network data has been collected though eliciting ties from respondents in a predefined set of individuals, covert networks pose obviously challenges in several respects. Firstly, the individuals in the network might not be known a prior. Secondly, what constitutes a relevant set of individuals and ties might be ambiguous.
