Congratulations to Bashirah Salami, and Gurpreet Singh, for being selected as finalists for the 2026 GRADflix video competition! 

GRADflix is a video competition for graduate students designed to highlight their research in sixty seconds or less to a non-specialized audience. The competition highlighted both the impact of their academic work and their ability to convey complex ideas clearly and creatively.

 After completing her bachelor's in chemical engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Bashirah Salami is now a master’s student in sustainability management at the School of Environment, Enterprise, and Development (SEED). 

She holds research interests in sustainable food-energy nexus, agri-business innovation and social equity and environmental justice. Her current research focuses on phosphorous management, conducting material flow analyses in agricultural systems.  

Bashirah’s GRADflix entry on phosphorus management earned her a spot as a finalist in the competition.  

Gurpreet Singh

Gurpreet Singh smiling

 Having completed his bachelor's in earth and atmospheric science, then his master’s in aerospace engineering from York University, Gurpreet Singh is now a PhD student in sustainability management at the School of Environment, Enterprise, and Development (SEED). His research interests lie in space systems, sustainability, and defence. Having experience of working for defence companies such as L3harris, Gurpreet is now focused on bringing a solution to man-made waste in space.  

His current research focuses on human utilizations of space in Earth’s orbital space. His GRADflix entry on “Space-footprint” earned him a spot as a finalist in this competition. 

Congratulations to Bashirah and Gurpreet for your outstanding work demonstrating how you work with the world, for the world to advance solutions for people and planet. A big congratulations as well to all the finalists who shone at this year’s GRADflix showcase on Tuesday, March 10! All entries for GRADflix offered significant and thoughtful insight into pressing global challenges, from health to sustainability.
