Larry Swatuk

Dr. Larry Swatuk, professor in the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED), has retired after 17 years with the Waterloo Faculty of Environment. Let’s extend our congratulations to Larry as we wish him well in retirement!

Larry was already a distinguished scholar when he joined Environment in 2008 as an associate professor and fellow of the Balsillie School of International Affairs. He earned his PhD in Political Science from Dalhousie in 1993, following which he held research and teaching appointments at several institutions across the continent of Africa, as well as in Canada.

Bringing this deep global experience to the Faculty of Environment, Larry helped establish SEED and developed and led several graduate and undergraduate programs, including the International Development program, and Master of Development Practice program.

Larry is the kind of person we all want on our team, with his ‘get the job done’ approach. Larry always went the extra mile, bringing endless energy and excitement to our collective mission. His legacy lives on in the Faculty of Environment.”

Bruce Frayne, dean, Faculty of Environment

Beyond his impressive record of service and leadership in international development education, Larry remains a prolific researcher with expertise in natural resource management, freshwater governance, international development, and water security. He is member of several research institutes, an Associate Editor of the Water Alternatives journal, and a founding member of the Environmental Peacebuilding Association.

Please join us in thanking Larry for his significant contributions to our Faculty and wish him the very best in his retirement.

The Master of Economic Development Innovation Program equips its graduates with the knowledge, tools, and approaches to address contemporary economic development challenges in cities and communities across Canada and internationally. The one-year program ends with a capstone project, which includes the option of completing a four-month internship in the economic development field. This year, four MEDI students undertook an internship, including Ricky Zhao and Kellie Hettinga. Zhao completed his internship at the County of Perth as a Tourism Officer. Hettinga completed her internship with the City of Woodstock within the Economic Development department.
