Kyle Scholz wins teaching award

Kyle Scholz - around the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, it's practically a household name. Kyle first came to the University of Waterloo in 2004 to start his undergraduate degree, and he has been here ever since. After completing a Joint Honours BA in English and German, he went on to do an MA in German, and right now he is just months away from completing his PhD.

Make connections

Hello, my name is... introducing oneself can be a challenge, especially in professional situations. Therefore networking strategies and communicating about oneself were the main themes of the workshop "making connections" last Thursday. Read Caterina's full report about the workshop!

Katharina Schröder, a PhD student from the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, is looking for people interested in participating in her PhD research. She is exploring the experience of adults who were raised in (partly) German speaking families in Canada (and/or other places where German is not a majority language). Specifically, she is looking for participants who are taking steps to further develop their German, either formally or informally, or who have done so, as adults, in the past.

Who was Siegfried and why does he matter?

This course studies changing notions of German identity and nationhood by exploring a foundational myth of the German nation: the life and death of the hero Siegfried the Dragonslayer.

Prof. Alice Kuzniar will be teaching a new course on German transnational film in Winter Term 2015. GER 359: Transnational Film, Intercultural Encounters will explore recent German cinema's involvement with other cultures.
