Departmental Graduate Student Associations

Recognized by the Graduate Student Association-University of Waterloo, Departmental GSA’s often organize and promote social events for graduate students within individual departments.

Graduate Student Association-University of Waterloo (GSA-UW)

The Graduate Student Association-University of Waterloo (GSA-UW) is a student-run not-for-profit and the official representation of graduate students at Waterloo. The GSA-UW hosts a number of social events and provide graduate students with academic support, mental and physical health supports, legal aid, as well as advocacy and representation.

BIPOC Student Collective

The GSA-UW runs the BIPOC Student Collective, a virtual space that aims to centre the academic and social experiences and needs of Black, Indigenous, People of Colour Graduate students. This is a safe space that facilitates peer-to-peer support, mentorship between faculty and students, and professional and academic development. 

Study Spaces

There are plenty of quiet study spaces across campus as well as spaces that have natural lighting, outlets or other amenities to boost your productivity and wellbeing while working. Both the Writing and Communication Centre (WCC) and the Library have listings of favourite study spaces.

Rock your Thesis

Rock your Thesis is a three-part program that guides graduate students through the first phases of planning and writing a thesis or dissertation. The series covers topics such as planning and project management, structuring your thesis or dissertation, writing a literature review, using strategies for finding and recording research sources, and revision.

Dissertation Boost Camp

Dissertation Boost Camp is a four-day program combines workshops with individual writing time and individual consultations to help thesis and dissertation writers set goals and make progress in their work.

Writing and Communication Centre (WCC)

The WCC will work with you to develop your scholarly voice and to build strategies for tackling your research paper, article, presentation, thesis or dissertation. Services for graduate students include: one-on-one appointments, graduate-specific workshops, and the Grad Writing Café.

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Training

QPR training teaches participants how to recognize and support someone who may be having thoughts of suicide.

Recognizing and Responding to a Person in Distress Training

In this workshop, Recognizing and Responding to a Person in Distress, we aim to give the University of Waterloo students and employees the skills and confidence to support others (students and colleagues) who may be in distress.

FunkBucket

FunkBucket is an interactive and accessible drumming workshop that is designed to help reduce stress, amplify feelings of connection, and tap into innate creativity.
