KI alumni team up in design project competition

Friday, September 30, 2016

Alexandra Olarnyk, BKI '15, Adam Thorsteinson, BKI '14, and Rebecca Mendes from Waterloo's GBDA program, recently worked on a very cool project.

They entered a package design competition and their design was chosen into the top 40 of the best works, after a jury analyzed over 700 entries from 46 countries. It was displayed in Prague at the CZECHDESIGN Gallery.

The challenge was to design a cardboard package that can be used again after its initial use.

Their solution: BeatBooster, headphone packaging that can turn into a music amplifier after opening. Just remove end tabs, take out headphones inside, slide phone into the center slot, and press play.

See their design on the Young Package 2016 competition web site.

They said they used many of the thinking and design skills gained in the KI core course INTEG 121: Design and Problem Solving. "All in all it felt very 121. We all used our different skills and practiced physical design. It went really well."
