Knowledge Integration is a valuable foundation for becoming an engaging teacher.
In today’s teaching landscape, educators are faced with two pressing concerns in particular: creating classes which welcome and engage varied students, and providing those students with the skills to succeed in an ever-changing future.
Josh, BKI'18, went to the University of Toronto, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), Master of Teaching program, intermediate/Senior, first teachable French, second teachable History, and is now a high school teacher.
Here's what else he said when we asked him how he felt his Bachelor of Knowledge Integration degree prepared him for his teacher training and in his teaching career:
"Knowledge Integration gave me firsthand experience conducting inquiries, collaborating across disciplines, and developing learning experiences with the learner in mind. Through these teachings, Knowledge Integration uniquely prepared me to design effective learnings environments, and to enable students to design their own futures through their education."
Cassidy Raynham, BKI'22, is graduating with an Honours Bachelor of Knowledge Integration and Mathematics Minor. She was accepted into all four teacher education programs to which she applied and will be attending the University of Western Ontario for their Bachelor of Education Intermediate/Senior program with Mathematics and Health & Physical Education as teachable subjects.
"I was very happy to stumble upon the Knowledge Integration program because it is the best preparation for teacher education out there.
The freedom to “design your degree” allowed me to explore teachable subjects through electives in math, science, history, geography, social science, and health & physical education.
The core courses are also extremely relevant to teaching. In the first year KI core courses, you learn how to learn and appreciate the value of hands-on learning. In the second year core courses, you learn how to communicate advanced topics to people with no knowledge of them. Throughout the museum course sequence, you learn how to define learning goals and select appropriate educational pedagogies. Finally, the Senior Research Project allows you to choose a topic in education if you wish, such as designing lesson plans for the new Ontario coding curriculum like I did."
