Rittinger & Motz took commissions from printing work and published a local German language newspaper: the Berliner Journal. The first edition was published in December 1859.

The Berliner Journal flourished and Rittinger & Motz began purchasing other newspapers in the region including the English Daily News Record, Berlin Daily Records, Berlin News Record and the Berlin Daily Express.

Caption reads: The Berliner Journal was located in the late 1880's on King Street West, above Jaimet's book store location in 1959. King Street, Berlin, had wooden sidewalks and hitching posts. The Journal staff included (left to right) Leo J. Kiefer, Herman Rittinger, William J. Motz, later publisher of The Record; his father, John Motz, one of the Journal's founders; Freidrich Rittinger, another founder; John Treusch and William Rittinger.
