William John died in 1946 and his son John Edward carried on with the Kitchener Daily Record. John Edward spent much of his youth away from home and graduated from the University of Notre Dame where he was the editor of the school paper. His correspondence from that time shows a fun-loving but studious young man who was taking advantage of all that university life had to offer.
