Management Science & Engineering Addendum
Created December 2024
This Addendum supplements the Faculty of Engineering Performance Evaluation Guidelines, providing evaluation criteria for teaching, research, and service specific to the Department of Management Science and Engineering. In case of any conflict between this Addendum and the Faculty Guidelines, the Faculty Guidelines will take precedence.
This Addendum will be reviewed biennially (every two years), and changes will take effect on odd numbered years. Any updates must be approved by a faculty vote in the department before the start of the evaluation calendar year to which the revised version applies.
Performance evaluations occur on an annual basis for faculty members holding probationary or definite-term appointments, and on a biennial basis on odd numbered years for faculty members holding tenured or permanent appointments (Article 13.5.2(a) of MOA).
Since performance evaluation is handled in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement between the Faculty Association of the University of Waterloo and the University of Waterloo (MOA), Policy 77 - Tenure and Promotion of Faculty Members, Faculty of Engineering guidelines, and this addendum, faculty members are encouraged to review all four documents.
- Assessment of Teaching Component
- Teaching performance is assessed on the evidence from the year(s) under evaluation.
- The assessment of teaching performance will include factors such as, but not limited to: teaching quality, undergraduate and graduate supervision, class and course characteristics (e.g., class size, course level, course difficulty, type), course development and improvement activities, and pedagogical research.
- Assessment of Research and Scholarship Component
- Research performance will be assessed annually for untenured faculty, and biennially (odd years) for tenured faculty, for the previous three calendar years. For teaching-stream faculty with a research component, research performance will be assessed annually for probationary-term faculty, and biennially (odd years) for permanent faculty.
- Our department expects research-based faculty members to produce high-quality research (e.g., publishing in high-quality outlets).
- Research performance will be evaluated based on:
- Quality of outlet, publication volume, authorship contributions (e.g., order of authorship, number of authors, explanation of contribution).
- Research funding (e.g., competitiveness, value, source of funds, etc.)
- Impact of research (e.g., impact/achievement awards, public/media recognitions, etc.)
- Supervision of postdoctoral fellows and non-student research personnel will be assessed as research.
- Large, high-profile, and competitive grant applications (successful or not) are explicitly considered by the merit committee when evaluating research and scholarship. A faculty member’s role in collaborative grants will be considered.
- Assessment of Service Component
- Service performance will be assessed on the evidence from the year(s) under evaluation.
- Specific information on the responsibilities, such as of committee memberships and time commitment should be described in each case.
- Any service, internal or external, that contributes to the activities or enhances the reputation of the University, Faculty or the Department will be valued. Faculty members are expected to contribute to both internal and external service; however, as outlined in the Faculty of Engineering guidelines, internal service is prioritized, and external service is not required to achieve an outstanding service score.
- Faculty members are expected to participate in the following service tasks:
- Attending monthly departmental meetings
- Participating in the hiring process for new faculty (separate from DACA responsibilities)
- Pursuing and maintaining registration as a professional engineer (or limited license holder) in good standing, including ongoing requirements such as continuing professional development (if eligible)
- Contribution to the department outcomes-based assessment (OBA) process
- Participation in service tasks such as the following will be valued:
- Recruitment events and activities (e.g., attending open houses, writing notes to prospective students, etc.)
- Attending an event for the graduating class, such as convocation or the capstone symposium and awards event
