Claudia De Fazio (BASc 24’, management engineering) was awarded second place in the Undergraduate Technical Paper competition at the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) annual conference.
The competition highlights outstanding technical papers written by undergraduate students.
De Fazio was eligible to compete in this international competition after winning first place at the national IISE conference hosted by Polytechnique Montreal. Her paper titled, "Towards Sustainable Transportation: An Optimization Model for Electric Aircraft and High-Speed Rail Integration," was developed during her co-op term as a research assistant with Dr. Mehrdad Pirnia. It focuses on modelling a possible network of electric planes and high-speed rail using the infrastructure of existing regional airports and rail corridors to increase the connectivity between communities over travel distances of less than 800km.
The IISE provides valuable knowledge, training, and networking opportunities, aiming to develop technically and socially adept Management and Systems Engineers. The University of Waterloo's IISE chapter, advised by Dr. Oliver Schneider, supports students' academic, professional, and social growth.
