Physical description: 1 file folder of letters, membership & marriage certificates and an autograph book
Biographical sketch: Philip S. Martin was born 27 August 1919 to Ezra and Judith Sauder Martin. He began as a farmer, but then became a carpenter, working for his brother, Menno S. Martin until he died from complications of diabetes at age 49.
Philip married Leah Rudy on 27 October 1943. They attended the Old Order Mennonite Church until 1947 when they began to attend the Markham Mennonite Church. In August 1957 they became members of the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church. When first married they lived near Linwood, ON but then built a new home near Wagner's Corners on the Heidelberg Highway. Philip and Leah had ten children
Scope and content: The papers relate to Philip's service as a conscientious objector during World War II, and includes letters from the Department of National War Services in 1941 and 1942; his church membership certificates from 1940 and 1941, and his notice of call in July 1941. Also included is an autograph book from his time of service at the Montreal River Alternative Service Work camp. Two of Philip's sons (Alvin and Omar) were named after Amish Mennonite young men that Philip met at Montreal River. Also included with the collection is a listing of descendants through 2005.
Custodial history: Donated to the Mennonite Archives of Ontario by Alvin & Ruth Martin on 9 November 2005.
Notes: Also included in the donation, but placed in the Old Order Mennonite collection is a map of Old Order families in 1944.
