Spring Forward, Fall Back: Jazz Ensemble Concert

Sunday, July 27, 2025 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)
jazz ensemble - saxophones

Many of the students in our jazz ensemble are Mathies of one sort or another.  Why are they attracted to jazz you might ask? In a jazz ensemble, different instruments might play different rhythms simultaneously. For example, the bass might play a steady 4/4 rhythm while the piano plays a 3/4 rhythm, creating a 4:3 polyrhythm. Sometimes, entire sections of a jazz piece are built around polyrhythms. These cross-rhythms can create a driving, propulsive feel that pushes the music forward. Jazz music also involves a lot of organized improvisation and so called "swing". These are among the key elements that give jazz its distinctive, dynamic sound. They challenge both the musicians and the listeners, making the music engaging and vibrant.

This ensemble is directed by longtime jazz musician Michael Wood.  More concert details will be available closer to the date. Reception to follow in the lower atrium.
