What is it?
MTHEL 99 is an online, skills-based course designed to help you refresh your knowledge of high school mathematics as you start your university journey. We believe that this will be especially helpful because many of you finished your high school mathematics in unusual circumstances due to the global pandemic.
What content will it cover?
It will give you extra practice with inequalities and absolute values, radicals and rational expressions, trigonometry, exponential and logarithmic functions, polynomials, and introductory calculus. Even if you already feel completely comfortable with these areas, we encourage you to work through the materials and assessments in MTHEL 99 to give your mind a refresh before you start your university studies in mathematics.
How long will it take me?
MTHEL 99 is designed to take between 3 hours and 5 hours per week over 5 weeks. However, the course can be taken at your own speed and if your high school mathematics skills are very strong then you could complete the course in a few days.
When will I take this course?
The course will run during the month of August 2024. The course will be delivered asynchronous and you can work away at your own pace.
Will I be graded?
It will be graded and appear on your academic record/transcript as CR (credit) or NCR (no credit). We fully expect that every student who works through the material will obtain the credit.
Is this mandatory?
All incoming math students will be enrolled in MTHEL 99. If you are a transfer student from another post-secondary institution, then you will not be enrolled in this course. MTHEL 99 is not a required course, and so you may drop it using Quest if this is your preference. However, we strongly recommend that you give this course your best effort as it will help you feel as ready as possible for the mathematics material that you will see in your first term of study in the faculty.
What is the cost of this course?
As the course does not carry any credit weight, there is no cost associated with taking MTHEL 99.
