Celebrating the career of Dr. Marlee Spafford
By: Kelsey Gagnon, Associate Director, Advancement
After over 38 years with the University of Waterloo, Dr. Marlee Spafford is retiring.
Marlee’s career began following graduation from the School of Optometry and Vision Science in 1985. She joined the School as a lecturer, and immediately became involved as an undergraduate affairs officer, examiner, and member of the undergraduate affairs committee. In 1989, Marlee took on the role of optometrist-in-charge, and then in 1997 became clinic director for the School.
Marlee has held many student-facing roles over the last 38 years and made significant contributions to curriculum, undergraduate affairs and the overall improvement of student life in optometry. In 2006, Marlee moved to the leadership phase of her career as she became associate director of the School for two terms. She then moved to the position of interim director and interim associate dean of Science for Optometry.
From 2013 to 2019 Marlee served as associate dean, undergraduate studies, supporting students, faculty and staff through many changes. She was particularly instrumental in supporting faculty and students during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the transition to virtual learning.
“Marlee has been a truly valuable member of the Faculty of Science leadership team,” remarks Bob Lemieux, Dean of Science, “Marlee had tenacity, diplomacy, and above all passion for our students. I thank Marlee for her years of service supporting the Faculty, the University and our students.”
A continuing thread that spans Marlee’s career is her advocacy and support for students and their well-being. This can be seen in the many articles she has published. It is also reflected in her final role at the University as special advisor to the provost on student experience.
“The entire student population has benefitted from Marlee’s focus and advocacy for improved learning experiences,” comments Jim Rush, vice-president academic and provost, “On behalf of the University leadership team and our students, I wish Marlee a well-deserved and happy retirement.”
Marlee has shown passion and dedication to the profession of optometry, the University and all our students for 38 years. We will miss her quick humour, calm presence, professionalism and above all, her compassion.
