Dr. Andre Stanberry speaks about race in optometry

Dr. Andre Stanberry was a panelist in a recent webinar on race issues hosted by SUNY College of Optometry. Dr. Stanberry, who also chairs the Science Anti-Racism Taskforce at Waterloo, spoke about a consequential conversation he had on his first day of optometry school.

He also stressed the importance of inclusion in attracting and retaining Black people in optometry programs and the eye care industry.

Schools should take steps to ensure Black students feel welcome among the whole student body, Stanberry said, and take opportunities to hire within different sections of faculty, whether it be teaching, research or even administrators.
