Congratulations to Tonya DelSontro, Rodney Smith, and Lyndon Jones, this year’s recipients of the Excellence in Science Research Awards.

Since 2021, the Excellence in Science Research Awards have recognized outstanding research accomplishments by Science faculty members. Each year, three researchers from across the Faculty of Science are celebrated: one tenure-track faculty, one mid-career tenured faculty (up to 10 years post-tenure), and one senior-career tenured faculty (more than 10 years post-tenure).  

These awards draw attention to the research area of each recipient, recognize excellence at Waterloo, and strengthen subsequent nominations for external research awards.

The Waterloo Eye Institute clinic in downtown Kitchener provides essential eye care to more than 300 refugee and newcomer patients each year, helping reduce barriers to settlement.

In partnership with local organizations, the clinic offers dedicated monthly services, including eye exams and eye wear support for patients of all ages. With upcoming funding changes increasing costs, the clinic is expanding its schedule to serve more patients before new barriers to care take effect

Advocates for Indigenous Eyecare by Students (AIES, pronounced “eyes”) is a student-led group at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science focused on advocating for sustainable and accessible Indigenous eye care in Canada. Founded by fourth-year student Jeremiah Hyslop, and now led by Adrianna Warren and Elise Hansen, the group has quickly built momentum through education, engagement and outreach initiatives
