L’exposition « Invention et réinventions de lieux : approches intermédiales » rassemble six projets de recherche-création réalisés par des étudiants à la maîtrise et au doctorat en études françaises. Représenter des lieux qui nous entourent ou qui peuplent notre mémoire, c’est les inventer à travers un ou des langages esthétiques, mais c’est aussi les réinventer en fonction de leurs réaménagements, de la distance chronologique ou géographique qui nous sépare d’eux, des souvenirs plus ou moins fidèles que nous leur associons, des rêves que nous projetons sur eux, etc. Ces projets explorent ainsi les glissements sémantiques et esthétiques de certains lieux chers aux étudiants.

Chaque étudiant a créé un projet intermédial, croisant deux langages esthétiques (peinture et photographie, maquette et arts numériques, etc.) pour réfléchir au lieu choisi et à sa situation, son agencement, l’imaginaire ou la mémoire qui lui sont associés.

Cette exposition rassemble les six projets qui ont résulté de cette recherche-création. Quatre sont des œuvres concrètes, deux sont des œuvres numériques disponibles en suivant les liens indiqués. Outre les brèves notices qui les accompagnent, les étudiants ont également produit une réflexion théorique et critique de plusieurs pages et ont présenté et expliqué leurs démarches dans le cadre du séminaire.

En plus d’inciter les étudiants à produire une réflexion d’ordre théorique et critique sur un lieu chargé de significations pour eux, l’objectif était aussi de susciter leur créativité et de les inviter à s’approprier différemment les questions explorées dans le cadre du séminaire.

The Invention and Reinvention of Places: Intermedial Approaches

The exhibition “The Invention and Reinvention of Places: Intermedial Approaches” brings together six creative research projects carried out by masters and doctorate students in French Studies. To represent places that surround us or that occupy our memory is to create them through the use of one or more aesthetic media. It is, however, also to reinvent them in accordance with their rearrangement, the chronological and geographical distance that separates us from them, the memories that we associate with them, our dreams that we project upon them, etc. Thus, these projects explore the semantic and aesthetic shifts of select places dear to the students.

Each student created an intermedial project, combining two aesthetic media (painting and photography, miniature models and digital art, etc.) in order to reflect upon the chosen place and its location, its layout, and its associated memories (concrete or imaginary).

This exhibition assembles six projects stemming from this creative research. Four of them are material works, while the other two are digital and can be found by following the links provided. Outside of the brief descriptions that accompany these works, the students also produced a critical reflection in which they presented and explained their creative process in the context of the seminar.

More than just producing a critical and theoretical reflection on a place of particular significance, the goal was to stimulate the students’ creativity; to have them take the concepts covered in the lecture and personalize them through their own creative process.
