Inaugural Janet EA McDougall graduate scholarship in pharmacy for MSc and PhD students launched
Rishabh Sharma and Ashley Cid recipients of the 2023 award
The Janet E.A. McDougall Graduate Scholarship in Pharmacy was awarded for the first time this past June at the annual Graduate Awards Celebration.
This award celebrates the life of Janet McDougall, a proud Waterloo alum, successful entrepreneur who founded McDougall Scientific Ltd. and a passionate supporter of graduate students.
She created The Donald J and Kathleen D McDougall Graduate Scholarship in honour of her parents and celebrates Janet’s passion for science and graduate education.
Lynne Howarth, Janet’s life partner, has created the Janet E.A. McDougall Graduate Scholarship to honor Janet’s love of learning, passion for life-changing research, her trailblazing entrepreneurial nature and her commitment to giving back.
This year, the award was presented to two graduate students who have demonstrated academic excellence and presented a passion for improving medication, health outcomes and health related issues through a combination of research, community engagement and/or professional practice.
Rishabh Sharma – 2023 MSc student recipient
His research focuses on using instruments to identify and mange drug use problems encountered in persons with cognitive impairment and dementia. He holds nine first author peer-reviewed publications and volunteers in their community.
Receiving the 2023 Janet EA McDougall Graduate Scholarship is a profound honor that holds deep personal significance. The scholarship will provide me with financial support, necessary resources, and encouragement to pursue my research goals. This invaluable support will empower me to conduct comprehensive research, make impactful contributions, and ultimately improve older adults' well-being and quality of life.
Ashley Cid – 2023 PhD student recipient
Her passion and dedication is evident for improving patient health outcomes by reducing the negative impacts of the opioid crisis through community engagement and professional practice. I am grateful and honored to have been awarded the Janet EA McDougall Graduate Scholarship. This scholarship provides further support, motivation, and determination for me to continue improving health outcomes for Canadians by developing solutions for reducing the negative harms of the opioid crisis.
We were glad to have Lynne Howarth and Janet’s sister, Elaine McDougall, attend this years Graduate Award Celebration to honour Janet’s life and contributions.
