In an on-going effort to stem the epidemic of opioid overdose-related deaths, the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy, in collaboration with the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA), have produced a one-minute video which educates patients, their friends and family on the steps for giving a life-saving naloxone injection.
Waterloo Pharmacy worked with local pharmacists and public health officials to illustrate how to administer the drug, now available without a prescription in many community pharmacies. The video is intended to be shared with patients as a supplementary informative tool to counseling and education programs about preventing overdose deaths.
The video, a drill-down of the instructions for administering the opioid overdose reversal drug, is being rolled-out to Canadian pharmacists, public health units and first responders who are encouraged to show it to those at risk of opioid overdose and their support network.
In 2015, an estimated 2,000 Canadians died from opioid overdoses, and many provinces are forecasting a record number of deaths in 2016.
