The 10th Anniversary Regional Tour continues as the School of Pharmacy visits Niagara Falls

This week a team from Waterloo Pharmacy hosted a reception and presentation for the pharmacy community in Niagara Falls. The event was the second stop on the School’s Regional Tour, an event which celebrates the School’s 10th anniversary by saying thank you to pharmacists who support the School throughout the province. It brought together preceptors, co-op supervisors, alumni, and students who work in and around the Niagara and Hamilton regions.

Both regions provide valuable experiences for Waterloo Pharmacy students on co-op work terms and fourth year patient care rotations. Janhavi Malhotra is a Rx2018 student currently completing her rotations in Niagara: she has placements in Ridgeway, St. Catherine’s, and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

“I was interested the Niagara region because of the versatile nature of the placements offered,” says Malhotra. “I’ve had so many unique experiences - I’ve had the opportunity to work with patients suffering from substance use disorders, and I’ve honed my abilities to practice in a nonjudgmental fashion. Each patient has a unique health care story and learning that story can play a pivotal role in successfully managing the patient.”

Kellly lecturingMalhotra is one of the many students who attended the Waterloo Pharmacy reception alongside preceptors, supervisors, and alumni. The attendees were welcomed by the School and heard about plans to grow together over the next ten years. Professor Kelly Grindrod (right) presented on her pharmacy practice research, sharing how it has informed the development of Pharmacy5in5, a digital tool to help pharmacists and technicians stay up-to-date on important health topics. Pharmacy5in5 has over 2,000 users and uses a fun, quiz-based format that provides practical information that users can apply in their practice.

“On behalf of the Waterloo School of Pharmacy, I'd like to extend thanks to the pharmacy community in the Hamilton and Niagara regions. We are grateful for the instructive mentorship and unique experiences you provide for our students,” says Hallman Director David Edwards. “As we reflect on our past this year and look to our future, we look forward to deepening our partnership in the years to come.”

Thanks to all who came out for to the event! The next stops on the 10th Anniversary Regional Tour are Sudbury and Windsor; the School will visit these locations in the fall.
