COVID Vaccination Clinics and Community Service Learning

We are pleased to offer Community Service Learning (CSL) credit for students who volunteer at COVID vaccination clinics. CSL is an opportunity to work with and learn more about people who are vulnerable to poorer health outcomes due to social and economic conditions. Volunteering at these clinics presents an opportunity to be of service to our community while also learning about the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on vulnerable populations.

Eligibility: Students in Rx2022 & Rx2023 cohorts who have completed preparation workshops are eligible for this CSL opportunity.

Before volunteering, students must:

  • identify a goal for service and submit it as a learning statement on Charity Republic;
  • identify and report a contact person for verification
  • Submit the 3 signed safety forms to Charity Republic profile on or before first volunteer shift.
    • Note: Students must sign the Safety Orientation checklist to indicate they have been informed of the risks and the measures taken to mitigate those risks

During the volunteer work, student must:

  • submit one service reflection for each clinic shift (due within two months of service date)
  • focus service reflections on the vulnerable group identified in learning statement
    • Did you notice any unique challenges for this focus population?
    • Does this group require any accommodations in terms of health care services?
    • How might you alter your communication to better suit this population?
    • Do you foresee any ongoing consequences or limitations for this group?

After the volunteer work is complete, students must:

  • have a site supervisor verify the completion of reported service hours
    • ideally through email verification in Charity Republic (alt. arrangements possible)

Considerations:

  1. No Double Credit
    • You may use service toward your CSL or IPE requirements, but you may not use the same shift for both requirements. Any hours submitted for double credit will become ineligible for either program.
  2. Ability to complete Final Assignment:
    • You may complete all 20 hours of service at these clinics provided this work gives you enough experience to complete the application assignment. Read it in advance.
  3. Direct Service Hours:
    • Volunteer work at the clinics counts as direct service work. This may be important if you are combining this service with indirect service at another organization.

We look forward to reading about your experiences at the COVID vaccination clinics!
