Indigenization journey artwork

plants and berries arranged around the image of outstretched hands

“The focal point of this illustration is outstretched hands. A variety of berries being offered as a gift. To many Indigenous peoples, offering gifts itself is medicine. The act of sharing with one another and honouring each other helps us to heal and to grow, as plants do. Around the hand is a braid of sweetgrass in the shape of a heart. All 4 sacred medicines are present in this illustration. Tobacco, Sage, Cedar and Sweetgrass. All so important in healing and ceremony. Along with these are Poppies and Chokeberries. Above the hands is the sun, the ultimate healer and life giver.”

- Luke Swinson, a visual artist with Anishinaabe roots from Kitchener, Ontario.
