“A translation-invariant perspective on arithmetic (and) harmonic analysis”

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 11:00 am - 11:00 am EST (GMT -05:00)

Logic Seminar

Ian Payne, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Subdirectly Irreducible Algebras in Varieties of 2-semilattices”

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Algebra Seminar

Adam Chapman, Tel-Hai Academic College, Israel

“Linked Fields of Characteristic 2 and their u-Invariant.”

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Computability Learning Seminar

Michael Deveau, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Enumeration Degree and Existential Atomicity”

We will investigate the notion of a Turing degree of a structure. However, since it is not as useful as we would hope, we instead use enumeration degrees, which prove more fruitful. We then establish some results concerning existential atomicity of a structure.

MC 5403

Wednesday, March 1, 2017 3:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Geometric Analysis Working Seminar

Shubham Dwivedi, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Second Variation Formula, Morse Index and Stability”

We will derive the Second variation formula for a minimal submanifold. After defining the Morse index and Stable Minimal Submanifolds, we will derive the Stability Inequality. As a result, we will prove a theorem due to Simons and another theorem due to Schoen and Yau.

M3-3103

Thursday, March 2, 2017 12:30 pm - 12:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Algebraic Geometry Learning Seminar

Levon Haykazyan, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Two and a half examples"

After some review and a useful exercise on locally ringed spaces, we will look at three important examples. Affine plane minus the origin, affine line with doubled origin and the projective line. (We have seen the first example already, hence the half in the title.) We will show that all of these are schemes that are not affine.

“The critical height of a rational function”

Thursday, March 2, 2017 1:30 pm - 1:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Representation Theory Seminar

Brandon Doherty, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“The Lie Algebra of an Algebraic Group”

We will introduce the Lie Algebra of a linear algebraic group and begin studying the adjoint representation.
