The Mike Schout Wetlands Preserve is a 55-acre naturalization and wetlands restoration project located in New Hamburg. It began in 2019 when Mike Schout approached the Township about utilizing undevelopable floodplain land. The land was given to the Township to create a preserve that would combine wildlife, the environment, learning, and the health and well-being of the community. It features:
- 1.6 km long raised boardwalk that spans multiple wetland ponds (we'll walk this twice).
- Over 20 acres of pollinator meadows for bees, birds, and insects.
-
Heron, eagle, and osprey nests
- 10,000 trees planted with help of the GRCA, Let’s Tree Wilmot, and local residents.
-
Educational components that teach visitors about turtles, snakes, bats, and other species expected to make the wetlands their home.
