LED alum awarded $25,000 fellowship for doctoral work

Local Economic Development alum Konstantinos Karanasios was recently awarded with an Energy Council of Canada Energy Policy Research Fellowship, valued at $25,000. The award provides financial assistance for him to work on the EcoEnergy Innovation Initiative II project "Development of a utility grade controller for remote microgrids with high penetration renewable energy generation". This interdisciplinary project includes researchers from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Environment under the leadership of Dr. Claudio Canizares.

Karanasios is one of few LED alum to pursue doctoral studies. He will work on the project while completing his PhD in Geography and Environmental Management entitled "Community Choices: Pathways to integrate renewable energy into remote community energy systems" under the supervision of Dr. Paul Parker. The research focuses on First Nations and community engagement, governance, economic analysis and integration.

About the fellowship

The Energy Council of Canada Energy Policy Research Fellowship is a 10-year, $500,000 initiative that will support University of Waterloo students engaged in policy research. The awards are valued at $25,000 for doctoral students and $15,000 for master's students. Eligible topics are defined annually by the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE) in conjunction with the Energy Council of Canada.
