Professor Cameron McCordic in the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED) has been awarded both a SSHRC Insight Development grant and a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant in 2020.

Catalyzing Local Sustainable Development: Assessing Municipal Readiness for SDG Implementation. (2020). SSHRC: Partnership Engage Grant.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have become a helpful guide for international sustainable development efforts. Since their adoption in 2015, however, there has been a growing interest in the localization of the SDGs to guide sustainable development within municipalities. This project will work with the Region of Waterloo to develop reports and tools for SDG implementation in Canadian municipalities. Research Team: Cameron McCordic (Principal Investigator), Jefferey Wilson (Co-Applicant), Julie Wright (Industry Partner).

The Sustainable Development Goals under a Changing Climate: Understanding the SDG Relevant Urban Impacts of, and Adaptations to, Cyclone Idai. (2020). SSHRC: Insight Development Grant.

Climate change impacts (like more cyclones) may introduce new challenges to the achievement of the SDGs by the year 2030. These impacts have been felt particularly in secondary cities of the Global South, where the confluence of climate hazards and rapid urbanization have created a devastating environmental and human toll. This investigation will study the network of impacts from the 2019 Cyclone Idai in Beira, Mozambique. The work will provide valuable insights into effective policy pathways to achieving the SDGs under the strains of climate change in cities. Research Team: Cameron McCordic (Principal Investigator), Bruce Frayne (Co-Applicant), Brent Doberstein (Co-Applicant), Ines Raimundo (Collaborator).
