The importance of balancing a social life with schoolwork

My name is Linda, and I am a third-year Math/CPA student. Today, I’m here to talk about the importance of work-life balance while at university. It is sooo much more fun when you spend time with friends outside of schoolwork, and you can have memorable experiences with friends on campus or elsewhere when travelling together.

In my past two years, I gained many insights regarding work-life balance and want to share them with you!

  1. Exercise time management skills. A one-hour workload can easily turn into three hours with Netflix. One way to stay focused is to set a specific time on your calendar (possibly blocking Mondays between 5-8 pm), or clear space like library study rooms to do your work in. Then, once you’ve finished what you need to do, you can enjoy the rest of your time with friends.
  2. Join clubs or associations. Many School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) clubs provide valuable opportunities for networking in a professional environment. Many non-SAF extracurriculars may also interest you. Personally, I have had a fun time being part of the UWaterloo Badminton Club with alumni and students from different faculties. Don’t worry if you can’t find a club that suits your interest, because you can always start your own!

So, what are you waiting for? Enjoy your campus life with friends!
