Two of us (Maanveer and Abbey) had competed in SAF’s 2021 Investment Research Challenge (IRC) and had learned a lot from the experience. This experience made us prepared and very excited to compete in the IRC again. Puneet, the third teammate, was also thrilled at the opportunity to take on a new challenge. We all had met through the Student Investment Fund (SIF) prior to the competition and were excited to work together on a new project again.
During the IRC, Abbey was on a co-op work term while Maanveer and Puneet were on a school term, so we would set up virtual meetings to work on the challenge together. It was a bit difficult to coordinate meetings with everyone's busy schedules, however, we were able to complete our deliverables and research the company we were making a recommendation on.
We also wanted to stay very committed to our studies, work, and extra-curriculars which increased the challenge of getting to the finish line of the IRC. This proved to be a learning curve that allowed us to coordinate in a much more efficient manner and taught us to skip the bells and whistles that are not the main aim of researching potential investments. Ultimately, due to all our combined efforts we were able to put our best foot forward to make the finals and secure a fourth place finish in the Investment Research Challenge. We encourage all students to participate in SAF’s Investment Research Challenge next year as it gives students a unique experience to hone a skill set that can be very useful in their future career path.
