The road to the CFA Global Finals

Five SAF students—Luka, Jai, Hemadri, Charlene, and Josh—advanced to the CFA Institute Investment Research Challenge Global Finals, competing against the best students from 1,000+ universities worldwide.

Backed by months of research and industry insights, their confident “buy” recommendation for BRP showcased adaptability, teamwork, and resilience, earning them a top-tier finish on the global stage.

Four SAF students - John, Jaiden, Vanie and Joel - claimed first place and the $2000 grand prize at our 7th Annual Strategy Case Competition with a bold turnaround plan for a fictional Tesla in crisis. Discover how their “Thrive by Tesla” pivot, sharp financial modelling, and clear storytelling set them apart in a high-pressure challenge.

In this year’s Strategy Case Competition, Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) students Katie, Kevin, Grace, and Avika secured a 4th place finish, earning a $250 prize for their creative and unconventional approach.

Four Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) students, one global debt problem, and a mission to find the story within the numbers. That’s exactly what our team - Joel, Nate, Tim, and Callum – set out to do at the 2025 Manhattan Business Analytics Competition (MBAC).

Over reading week, Alex, Anthony, Nancy, Sarah, and Vivian, graduate students from the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF), had the privilege of representing the University of Waterloo at the Canadian MBA/Graduate Finals of the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) in Halifax.

Near the end of March, SAF's team of fourth-year students, Abisha (AFM), Colette (SFM), Dhiya (SFM), and Lucas (SFM), had the opportunity to represent the University of Waterloo for the first time at the McGill Desautels Business Ethics Case Competition in Montreal.

On March 22–23, our team of 3rd year students, Jei, Nishan, Tianna ( AFM), and Anoosha ( Biotech/CPA), had the opportunity to represent the University of Waterloo at the Van Berkom John Molson Small-Cap Case Competition, hosted at Concordia University in Montreal. The competition brought together students from across North America to pitch investment ideas for small-cap public companies over two fast-paced, high-intensity days.
