Paul Langill, MAcc '91, CPA, CA, has always been up for the challenge

by Alyana Versolatto

Even during his time at the School of Accounting and Finance when studying in the Master of Accounting (MAcc) program, Langill was drawn to complex problems that needed solving. This curiosity and tenacity led Langill to build an impressive career in the financial services industry.

Before his current role as CFO of Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), Langill had an expansive 20-year career at TD, including roles as Chief Operating Officer at TD Securities, and Executive Vice President of TD Bank Group. According to Langill, getting that breadth of experience in a large organization like TD was incredibly valuable because it allowed him to bring different perspectives to the table in each department. He also found that it’s important to not just know the technical aspects of a role, but also to be skilled in working effectively within a team as you develop a plan and see it through to fruition.

The School of Accounting and Finance caught up with Langill earlier this year to get his take on the state of disruption within the financial services industry, the importance of giving back to the next generation, and his advice for aspiring professionals who have dreams of building a career toward a C-suite level role.
