Romance in MAcc

Sarah and Brian Cheng

Every year we like to celebrate Valentine’s Day by sharing the stories of SAF alums that met and fell in love on the University of Waterloo campus. This year we are happy to share the story of two graduates of the Master of Accounting (MAcc) program whose love story began at a drama club audition of all places. Now, they are happily married and have two wonderful children. Read how Sarah Cheng (MAcc ’09), Founder of BLUISH, a venture not only known for selling tulle for women, moms and babies but also providing a platform for women to share stories of strength, resilience and growth., and Brian Cheng’s (MAcc ’09), a Partner at MNP, love story grew, like compound interest  if the interview took place in person, we have no doubt that they would have finished each other’s sentences.

Where did you first meet?

Brian: We first met in the Student Life Centre (SLC) in Room 2134 (or 2143, lol) for a student club meeting. Sarah was auditioning for something.

Sarah: SLC, at a meeting for a student drama club. I was peer pressured into going, I didn't know anyone there. Brian caught my attention (not romantically, though, lol) because he talked a lot.

How long have you been married?

Brian: 9.5 years.

Sarah: 10 years.

(Editor’s note: We’re still not sure where those 6 months went)

What did you do on your first date?

Brian: Ate.

Sarah: Alice Fazooli's, an Italian restaurant.

What is your fondest memory of your time together at UWaterloo?

Sarah and Brian with their kids

Brian: All of the times when we laughed together and the world around us melted away.

Sarah: We shared many hilarious moments together. There was one time we attempted to order fast food in the middle of the night by walking through a drive-through lane. We were inspired by Curb Your Enthusiasm and didn't think that we'd be turned away at the drive-through window for safety reasons (like on the show).

But we were.
We were turned away in the middle of the night, and we were told that it was unsafe to serve a pedestrian through a drive-through window. We shared a good laugh then at how ridiculous the whole situation was.

Do you have any marriage advice you'd like to share?

Brian: Pick up your socks.

Sarah: Not really. It's been 10 years and I'm still reminding him to pick up his socks.
