Researchers at the University of Waterloo have been experimenting with artificial intelligence to log problem areas before they turn into potholes. 

"This type of research that we're doing at the university focuses on video analytics," said John Zelek, an associate professor of engineering at the school.

A camera is mounted on a vehicle, which scans the road as it drives, logging the characteristics of different cracks and craters in the pavement. 

A company headed by a Waterloo Engineering alumna is getting a $1-million investment from a federal Crown corporation.

P&P Optica, whose president and CEO is systems design engineering graduate Olga Pawluczyk, will use the money from Export Development Canada (EDC) to fund its growth.

“The investment from EDC will help us both further develop our technology and expand into the U.S. and other markets as we work towards becoming a global company,” Pawluczyk said in a media release.

An artificial intelligence (AI) startup company with strong ties to Waterloo Engineering has cracked a list of the top 50 most important movers and shakers in the industry.

New types of data, coupled with advanced engineering tools, allow for more in-depth analysis of the human body as it pertains to specific movements and tasks. As a result, motions can be refined and equipment improved to help athletes maximize their abilities and performance. John McPhee, a professor of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo (UW), has overseen several studies on the motor function of Paralympic athletes.

Systems Design is pleased to announce that Brink Bionics, co-founded by Systems Design professor Ning Jiang, Systems Design Master student Erik Lloyd, and post-doctoral researcher Dr. Jiayuan He, which is housed in the PSE SYDE Garage, was one of the $25k winners at yesterday's Velocity Fund Finals. The company is a spin-off from Engineering Bionics Lab.
