Conflict Resolution

Overview

In this module, students learn to recognize different types of conflict handling styles and determine which style is most appropriate for a specific conflict situation. Students will recognize how differences among team members’ needs and perspectives can contribute to conflict, they will analyze a team conflict and create a conflict resolution plan to develop their ability to manage and engage conflict.

Topic & Skills

As a means to foster a greater willingness to participate in team conflict resolution practices, students will learn to assess a conflict situation in order to provide direction on implementing change processes or strategies to reduce or resolve conflict and to provide structure for the team. Students will use case studies and consider the attributes of effective teams to identify the root of a team conflict and potential opportunities for change to the team, task, or teammates. Students will reflect on how their personal conflict resolution style impacts the way they choose to approach conflict situations within their own teams.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session students should be able to:

  1. Explain how their personal conflict resolution style might impact their interactions within their own teams
  2. Identify the underlying sources of team conflict (by referring to the 9 attributes of effective teams)
  3. Assess a conflict in order to select the most appropriate conflict resolution handling style
