The playground at Elizabeth Ziegler Elementary School has a popular new addition thanks in part to a group of four UW Architectural Engineering students from the class of 2023. Recently a new play structure was installed in the schoolyard based on the custom design created by UW students Jocelyn Cao, Rayen Feng, Jake Gu and Michael Hioe. The design was completed as part of their AE 125 Structural Design Studio course held during Spring term 2019.

A few weeks ago, Architectural Engineer's studio project winners for Winter 2020 were announced. Stefan Rankovic and Nico Gomes "blew away" (their words) the panel of industry and faculty judges with their meticulously planned, and sustainable, facade project: MOD 5. Congratulations! We hope that Stefan and Nico's successes will inspire their fellow cohorts for future project competitions and make 2021's even more exciting!

Waterloo University students headed into public elementary classrooms last week to teach young students science and engage in hands-on learning. But the discussions also focused on what students hoped to do once they left school.

“Design Days” is a unique two-day event held during Orientation Week, for new Architectural Engineering students. Students are given the opportunity to solve a challenging, open-ended problem by brainstorming, designing and constructing a solution in collaboration with their new classmates.  The aim of the event is to engage students in “design from Day 1”, and create an experiential learning environment where students are given the freedom to explore creative ideas whilst also drawing on the resources of experienced faculty, staff, technicians and upper-year students, for guidance.
