CAY-01: Recycling Deposit and Return System in Northern Canadian Communities

Problem area

The growing waste management and recycling challenges facing Northern communities. In places such as Iqaluit limited recycling infrastructure has led to significant accumulation of recyclable materials and broader waste management concerns. This causes negative impacts on both the natural environment as well as human health. Thus, the City of Iqaluit is interested in partnering with us after a trip to Greenland with the Managing Director of the Future Cities Institute at the University of Waterloo after seeing a bottle deposit system in Greenland.

Main objectives

  • To work with Indigenous and rural communities in Northern Canada on this initiative through stakeholder engagement
  • To create a prototype for a bottle/ can return deposit system and/ or acquire one to be piloted in Northern Canadian communities
  • Develop a step-by-step plan detailing the process involved for policy changes and implementation
  • Ongoing pipeline of industrial design process
  • Recommendations for next steps

Scope of work

The project will cover a literature review, environmental scan, presentation, report, prototype, industrial process mapping and feasibility study.
