Problem area
Many existing arterial roads and transportation corridors were designed primarily to move vehicles efficiently rather than support the diverse mobility needs of growing communities. As municipalities evolve, these corridors often lack safe and accessible infrastructure for walking, cycling, transit users, and other forms of active transportation. At the same time, cities are seeking opportunities to integrate green infrastructure, improve public spaces, enhance climate resilience, and create more connected and inclusive communities. This project will explore how existing transportation infrastructure can be retrofitted and reimagined using Complete Streets principles to better serve current and future community needs.
Main objectives
- Assess opportunities to transform existing transportation corridors into Complete Streets that support all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and motorists.
- Identify strategies to integrate green infrastructure and sustainable design elements into transportation corridors.
- Develop recommendations for municipalities to prioritize and implement improvements that enhance safety, accessibility, connectivity, and community well-being.
- Create a replicable framework that can be applied to similar corridors in other communities.
Scope of work
- Conduct a literature review on Complete Streets, transportation planning, green infrastructure, urban mobility best practices, applicable municipal policies, plans, and case studies.
- Select and assess an existing transportation corridor or arterial roadway as a case study (potentially in partnership with a municipal client).
- Analyze current corridor conditions, including mobility, safety, accessibility, land use context, utilities and environmental impacts.
- Develop alternative design concepts or retrofit scenarios that improve active transportation, sustainability, and user experience.
- Evaluate the potential impacts of proposed solutions using qualitative and quantitative measures.
- Produce a final set of recommendations, implementation considerations, and a framework that municipalities can use when planning future Complete Streets and active transportation investments.
