Problem area
Provisions for lateral-torsional buckling of steel beam-columns braced on one flange only are not well defined in codes & standards. This failure mechanism may be present in chords and collectors of floor and roof diaphragm systems.
Main objectives
Perform a desktop study on the impact to lateral-torsional buckling resistance of beam-column type elements provided by bracing on one flange only.
Scope of work
Develop an understanding of diaphragm systems, buckling vs lateral-torsional buckling failure mechanism, & the role of lateral and torsional bracing of steel w-sections
- Using SAP2000 or ETABS, Perform a three-dimension non-linear desktop stability analysis of w-section beam-column(s) to evaluate the impact to lateral-torsional buckling resistance provided by lateral bracing at one-flange.
- Prepare a brief report (~10pages) outlining the purpose, methodology, & findings of the study.
- Present the study to Mott MacDonald via a ~1hr in-person lunch-and-learn style presentation
