Biography

Biography Summary
Yilan Liu joined the Department of Chemical Engineering as an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo in 2023. In Yilan’s lab for synthetic biology and sustainable development (LSS), we harness synthetic biology to deliver products and services that contribute to sustainable development. We currently focus on developing functional probiotics to supply an affordable and preventive health solutions, and engineering bacteria to convert mixed solid waste into useful products.
Yilan got her MASc at Chinese Academy of Sciences, where she earned Master of Natural Science, under the supervision of Ying Wang. She pursued her PhD in Biochemical Engineering at Chinese Academy of Sciences under the supervision of Professor Jianmin Xing and Professor Qinhong Wang. She conducted post-doctoral training at University of Nebraska-Lincoln under Professor Wei Niu, and at University of Toronto under Professor Radhakrishnan Mahadevan. Between 2021 and 2022, she conducted Research Associate at University of Toronto under Professor Radhakrishnan Mahadevan.
