Capstone goes online in Spring 2020! Prof. Adil Al-Mayah and Prof. Nadine Ibrahim are teaching the Fourth Year Civil Engineering Design Project - Phase 1 (CIVE 400) this term, and wanted to thank all faculty who are serving as technical advisors. There are 32 teams in total, all of whom have found technical advisors to support and offer guidance to their design projects. A number of groups are working on modular construction of hospitals and clinics - motivated by the present situation! Here's a photo collage of some of the groups in the first meeting on Teams. Linebacker decides to play for hometown team instead of pursuing opportunities in U.S.

WATERLOO — James Hinsperger has been weighing his options for months, trying to determine the best fit for a standout football player who's every bit as good in the classroom.

In the end, the place he'd been looking for was under his nose all along.

Team BuCKeT will be competing this year at the 2020 Student Design Compitition at Ryerson University. This Competition takes place on Sunday March 29 at 10:00am. They will also be showcasing their work at the CEE Capstone on Mar 24 under the Project Title: Innovative Stormwater Management in the City of Richmond Hill, Mill Pond.

The Student Design Competition (SDC) is an annual challenge that provides an opportunity for student teams to apply their knowledge to a current real world problem.

An engineering master’s candidate has been awarded one of two scholarships awarded to civil engineering students in Ontario. Michelle Liu was honoured with a $2,500 Manuel Fine scholarship from the Deep Foundations Institute’s (DFI’s) educational trust. While working on her undergraduate degree in civil engineering at the University of Waterloo, Liu became interested in the environmental challenges faced in northern communities.

Our department suffered a grievous loss on Wednesday January 8, 2020. Mansour Esnaashary Esfahani, one of our doctoral students, was onboard flight PS725 that crashed in Iran resulting in the tragic deaths of all those aboard. Our thoughts are with his family, his recent bride, Hanieh, and his friends. We mourn his passing.

Encouraging students to consider a future in science

WATERLOO — Elementary students are handed a few wooden blocks and told to build an arch, supervised by university students.

The simple purpose is to teach them science. The deeper purpose is to build a future.

The 3MT challenges competitors to use 1 static slide and 3 minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their graduate research to a non-specialist audience.Haya Almutairi, a PhD Candidate in Civil & Environmental Engineering, was chosen to represent Waterloo at the Ontario Provincial 3MT finals. Haya advanced from the provincial finals to become one of twelve Canadian National 3MT finalists.To read more and to vote click here

We are pleased to announce that at the CSCE (Canadian Society of Civil Engineers) Annual Congress in London, ON last week, the Capstone project team representing the University of Waterloo’s Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department came in 3^rd place nationally!

Earlier in the year, our undergraduate student chapter produced an annual report for the CSCE (Canadian Society of Civil Engineers) and amidst fierce competition, their report took home one of the coveted awards!

The CSCE Student Affairs Committee evaluated final annual reports (2015-2016) from 24 schools and awarded Waterloo the Most Improved Student Chapter.

The competition was very keen with many outstanding reports, but the committee was extremely impressed with the professionalism and the quality of our report.

Every year, the Canadian Geotechnical Society holds student competitions to recognize excellence among undergraduate and graduate engineering students at Canadian universities.

On January 20, 2016, the first round of competition was held between six Southern Ontario Universities: McMaster, York, Waterloo, Toronto, Ryerson and Western. Irfan Muhammed, a UW geotechnical grad student, was named the winner of the universities' competition and now advances to the national competition.
