A lecture by Professor Claude Eilers

Tuesday, October 23, 2018 10:00 am - 10:00 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

The Department of Classical Studies is proud to present a lecture by Professor Claude Eilers, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON. The title of the lecture is  "Anti-Jewish Sentiment in Rome and the Provinces" and it will be held on Tuesday October 23 from 10:00-11:20 in AL 209.

In 62 BCE, the Jews of the Asia Minor were forbidden to send their annual contribution to the temple of Jerusalem, their collected funds were confiscated by the Roman governor Flaccus.  Not only this incident will be revisited, but also the way it was represented in Rome when the governor was tried, but defended by Cicero in 59 BCE (Pro Flacco 66-70).  Further studied will be how the event relates to legal privileges attested for the Jews in the Roman Empire under Caesar (Jos. Ant. Jud. 14.213-16, 244-46).

The lecture is free, but seats are limited.  Recommended level: graduates and advances undergraduates in Classical, Religious or Jewish Studies.
