In his talk, Julian will show how young people in the Roxbury neighbourhood in Boston formed a coalition called ‘Clean Buses for Boston’ as a response to increased asthma levels in the area. He will look at global climate justice activism, highlighting especially, the role of young girls and women and finally, he will look at food justice: who grows Canada’s food, and why this matters.

The Meaning of Ice: Co-production of knowledge and community action in a changing Arctic

Drawing on experience from over two decades of close collaboration with Inuit communities in the Arctic, Dr. Fox will illustrate the powerful ways our understanding of the changing Arctic climate can be advanced when we link Inuit knowledge and visiting science.

What does ice mean to different people? How can linking different ways of knowing about ice add to our understanding about the Arctic, and how it is changing? What does this mean for the rest of the world and our sustainable future? Dr. Shari Fox will address these and other questions in a lecture that explores sea ice and the changing Arctic environment through community-led research, harvesting, photography, science, art, and more.

The students in the Knowledge Integration program invite you to experience the culmination of our third-year design project: The Museum Course. Working in teams to produce these exhibits has been a rewarding and unique experience.

Using examples from African countries, he will explore how the global community can transform the challenges facing our oceans into opportunities for growth to bolster sustainable development and stimulate socioeconomic transformation.
