Congratulations are in order for three members of our Dean’s Office staff.

A fond farewell to Faye Schultz

After many years of dedicated service, Faye Schultz is stepping away from the Executive Officer role but leaves behind a lasting legacy.

Faye has been a highly valued and dedicated employee of the University of Waterloo for more than four decades. Having worked in five of the six Faculties, as well as the Registrar’s Office and the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost, her impact has been felt across campus and sector wide.

Bruce Mitchell, distinguished professor emeritus and former associate provost has this to say about Faye’s impact on academic integrity at Waterloo and across the country: “Faye was one of the first staff members in the UWaterloo academic integrity office and she did a wonderful job in developing a mix of creative and thoughtful activities that helped faculty, staff and students understand and embrace the importance of achieving academic integrity at the University.  The UWaterloo academic integrity office was one of the first in Canadian universities and, as a result, Faye also became a valued source of advice to other universities across the country as they developed their approaches to academic integrity.”

In 2012, Environment was fortunate to have Faye join us as Executive Officer, bringing with her the deep institutional knowledge she built over many years. Faye has been and will continue to be a role model for many in Environment, embodying the highest levels of dedication, integrity, resilience, and work ethic. Faye is also admired for her sharp problem-solving mindset which helped shape thoughtful solutions to many challenges over the years. In addition to these laudable qualities, Faye possesses a keen wit and sense of humour – with a well-timed comment, she has always been able to remind colleagues of the importance of keeping perspective and camaraderie when navigating both smooth and turbulent times.

Former dean Jean Andrey sums up Faye and her legacy perfectly: "Faye's astute leadership and hard work have been gifts to all of us. There is no one who I relied on and respected more."

Please join me in thanking Faye and wishing her the best in this next phase of her career.

Our new executive officer Tara Charlton

With Faye stepping down from her role, I am pleased to announce that Tara Charlton, our faculty’s financial officer (2016-2022) and interim executive officer (2022-2024), has accepted the position of executive officer on an ongoing basis.

Tara is a Chartered Professional Accountant with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. After five years in the private sector, Tara joined the Office of Research as a financial analyst. Since 2011, Tara has served as faculty financial officer, research in Arts and faculty financial officer in Environment.

Tara stepped into the interim executive officer role in Environment in 2022 and quickly demonstrated competence and instilled confidence in our community. Tara personifies integrity, proficiency, practicality, and approachability, making her a great colleague and supervisor. When Faye announced that she was stepping away, there was a competitive process to hire her successor, following which the committee had no doubts about offering Tara the role.

Please congratulate Tara on her appointment as executive officer and wish her many happy years in the role.

Financial officer Tyler Batchelor

Since 2022, we have been fortunate to have Tyler Batchelor as interim financial officer, and we are thrilled he has accepted an offer to join us on an ongoing basis. Tyler is a Chartered Professional Accountant with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting.

After graduation, Tyler served as a research financial and information analyst at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). He moved to the University of Waterloo in 2013 to take a research financial analyst position in the Office of Research, which he held until joining Environment as interim faculty financial officer.

Tyler is known for strong analytical and technical skills, and collegial approach, which have earned him the trust of people across the institution. Please welcome Tyler, officially, to the Dean’s Office staff.
