Frank Cairo (BES ‘05) is a leading force in revolutionizing the homebuilding sector. As the co-founder and CEO of the Caivan Group of Companies, which he founded with fellow Waterloo grad Troy van Haastrecht, Frank's leadership has propelled Caivan to establish itself as one of Canada’s largest land development and home building companies. Through its subsidiary, the Advanced Building Innovation Company (ABIC), Frank has led a paradigm shift in community building, harnessing software innovation and AI, advanced manufacturing technologies and automation. This includes the establishment of one of Canada’s largest home manufacturing centres, located in Ottawa, where homes are built in a cost effective, sustainable and highly precise methodology.
Frank believes deeply in the scientific method and the application of mathematics and algorithm in problem solving. This approach has led to the development of a variety of innovative tools that are now being applied to enhance scalability and efficiency in the fields of civil engineering, architecture, and manufacturing.
Frank's passion for integrating science with art in community development is evident in the company’s approach. He continuously challenges conventional methods, striving for excellence and setting an increasingly high bar, despite the industry's slow pace of change. Under Frank's leadership, the Caivan and ABIC Groups employ a suite of proprietary software technology it has developed in house including generative AI and parametric modelling capabilities in 6D, intelligent and autonomous work flows, real-time and predictive business and financial modelling tools and robotics.
Frank’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond his business; Caivan has invested $1 million in the Future Cities Initiative and $10 million in the Future Cities Institute at University of Waterloo. This institute fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to create a new toolkit for engineers and planners with the view to precipitating improved health and prosperity Canadian cities and beyond.
Frank’s support has enabled the institute to build a strong team focused on research and knowledge sharing, contributing to thriving, sustainable cities. The Director of the Future Cities Institute, Leia Minaker, states that “Frank is a consistent source of valuable insights, ideas, and passion for transformational change in city building.”
Frank chose to study at the University of Waterloo because of its strong focus on entrepreneurship and hands-on learning through co-op programs. Looking back, he describes his time at university as formative and eye-opening. He learned about the many ways to make a difference in the world, the value of having specialized skills, the need for diverse teams, and the importance of continuous learning.
Beyond his professional achievements, Frank Cairo and his wife, Nisha—both UWaterloo grads—have made remarkable contributions to various charitable organizations. Their philanthropy spans local schools, charities and hospital foundations, demonstrating a strong commitment to improving healthcare, education and social services. The Cairo family's dedication highlights their drive to create a healthier, more equitable society.
Frank’s journey from UWaterloo to industry leader highlights the importance of curiosity, grit, integrity and continuous learning. For students and young professionals, his advice is to embrace these values for long-term success.
