It was a winter break to remember for two University of Waterloo students. Emily Meissner and Millie Balmer are completing a placement in Kampala, Uganda, as part of the United College and Faculty of Environment run International Development (INDEV) program that sees students complete an eight-month overseas placement, facilitated by the World University Service of Canada.  

Congratulations to Kwaku Owusu Twum for successfully pitching his business idea at the Velocity Pitch Competition. He and his partner won $5,000 in funding to accelerate bridging the digital divide small-scale farmers experience.  

Anshikha Kumar, graduate student in the Master of Development Practice (MDP) program, attended the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) UN Climate Week 2023 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She reflects on her experience as a youth delegate and what she learned.

Earlier in August, a delegation from the Faculty of Environment travelled to Bhubaneswar and Puri, India, to build capacity on climate change initiatives and partnerships. Dean Bruce Frayne shares the highlights from the delegation’s activities, including hosting a Climate Change Workshop for Journalists and a weeklong research retreat.

Congratulations to Professor Simron Singh who has been awarded a University Research Chair (URC) in recognition of his significant contributions as an industrial ecologist in the area of socio-metabolic research on small islands. 

“Look beyond the beauty of our coastal wetlands, and you’ll find this habitat is hard at work,” starts the short video by Navya Vikraman Nair, PhD candidate in Sustainability Management (Water). Her work has been selected as one of this year’s top 25 Storytelling Challenge finalists; a national competition run by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
