Are you interested in learning more about Indigenization but not sure where to start? Do you have ideas to share and are looking for a like-minded community to share them with? Faculty members who work or teach in STEM are invited to the first event of the newly formed Indigenization in STEM Community of Practice. Folks of all backgrounds and levels of familiarity with the topic are welcome.
At this event, Dr. Veselin Jungic will share his perspectives over many years of working and partnering with First Nations communities in math and science outreach. This will be followed by a moderated Q&A with Dr. Jungic, to springboard a fruitful conversation about Indigenization in STEM.
Dr. Jungic is a 3M National Teaching Fellow from Simon Fraser University and a recipient of several teaching awards including the Canadian Mathematical Society Teaching Award and the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences Educational Award. The focus of his talk will be a program he started to engage First Nations primary and secondary students in studying mathematics. Math Catchers uses storytelling to make math more accessible through characters like Math Girl and Little Number. Dr. Jungic has much to teach us as we Indigenize our programs and begin our outreach to Indigenous communities.
The event will be hosted in WebEx and is open to all University of Waterloo faculty and staff. You will need a uwaterloo.ca email address to join.

The Indigenization in STEM Community of Practice
The Community of Practice is comprised of UWaterloo faculty and staff in STEM and related fields interested in forming meaningful relationships and partnerships with Indigenous peoples and incorporating Indigenous perspectives in university teaching, research, and outreach activities. The Community of Practice grew out of conversations between STEM faculty and FAUW's Indigenization Working Group.
