The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is awarding $1.5 million to the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) to lead the science of a mission called the Quantum Encryption and Science Satellite (QEYSSat), which will protect the communications and data of Canadians on Earth and in space.

Experiment finds way to increase photon efficiency for quantum communications

A team of researchers at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) demonstrated a new type of on-demand single photon generator that can shape photons to increase their efficiency when used in a quantum network.

Next-generation communication networks will rely on the transmission of quantum information. Single photons, as carriers of quantum information, will play an integral role in building these future networks.

Cutting-edge science met centuries-old traditions when researchers from the Institute for Quantum Computing trekked to the Canadian territory of Nunavut to share ideas.

“The quantum revolution is upon us and Canadians are helping lead the way,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau via video remarks at the Institute for Quantum Computing’s (IQC) 15^th anniversary celebration.

On June 22, dignitaries and fellow scientists from around the world gathered to mark 15 years of quantum research excellence at the University of Waterloo and the leadership of Raymond Laflamme who ends his term as IQC Executive Director on June 30, 2017.
