Quantum circuits and restricted LLM models
Rik Sengupta I IBM
In this talk, we show unconditional separations between “low-depth” quantum circuits and restricted classical models of transformers and diffusion models (the underlying mechanisms of most modern LLMs) in the realms of prediction and generation. We will go in depth into a functional separation, where we show a function (which can be thought of as a recursive variant of indexing) that can be computed by a small QNC^0[log log n] circuit (which uses log log n depth) followed by a single classical gate, but cannot be solved by a low-depth and low-width transformer. Our work contributes to the theoretical and systematic study of quantum advantage in the era of LLMs.
